Decorating for Christmas- why do we do it?

It happens every year like the tradition of Christmas itself. For those who celebrate Christmas, there’s always the group of people who decorate for the holidays early, and the group that decks their entire house in head to toe festiveness. We debate each and every year when we should decorate, and how much we should decorate, but I have another question:

WHY do we decorate?
